Dr. Dale R. Monast Introduces Laser Treatment For Toenail Fungus In the Tampa Bay Area

Toenail Fungus Laser Surgery Center is pleased to announce the introduction of laser treatment for toenail fungus. "Toenail fungus is one of the most common health issues faced by people who reside in wet climate zones like ours" says Dale Monast, D.P.M. "Previous therapies for fungal toenails have produced marginal results and some have produced undesirable side effects. The new laser technology kills the pathogens that cause toenail fungus. The gentle laser light works through the nail. It is safe, comfortable and has no side effects."

Fungus Problem? Laser Solution!

Fungus infection of the nails, also known as onychomycosis, is one of the most common dermatological disorders affecting the foot. The disease is characterized by a thickening of the nail plate, debris under the nail, a lifting of the leading edge of the nail, a change in nail color and occasionally an odor. Patients complain that toenail fungus is ugly and embarrassing. This condition is often ignored because the infection can be present for years without causing any pain. If ignored, the infection can spread to other nails & the skin on the feet. Largo Foot & Ankle Center offers a complete range of therapy for this condition. Contributing factors for developing toenail fungus infection include: a history of athlete's foot, injury to the nail, excessive perspiration, diabetes, circulatory problems, and immune-deficiency conditions Historically, treatments for fungal nails included topical medications, pills, or surgical removal of the nail plate. The topical medications were largely ineffective. Oral agents have been known to affect the liver and blood tests need to be monitored to prevent liver damage. Removal of the nail plate was painful and debilitating. The laser kills the fungus that lives in and under the toenail. The laser light passes through the toenail without causing damage to the nail or the surrounding skin. There is a warming sensation and some patients may feel a pinprick. Just walk in and walk out. The laser nail fungus procedure only takes 15-20 minutes. Shoes and nail polish can be worn immediately after the treatment.
